What to Expect If You Decide on Dental Implant Surgery
The stages of an implant procedure differ depending on the condition of your jawbone and the type of implant. Since the bone needs to heal tightly around the implant, the time taken for the whole treatment is different from one patient to another.
If Dr. Miller determines you are a candidate for implants, she will move forward by discussing your options and how many implants you need.
During this step, we extract the damaged tooth that needs replacement. If your tooth is already missing, you won’t need this step.
Based on the condition of your jawbone, gums, and overall oral health, you might need pretreatments performed before proceeding with implant placement.
Once your jawbone heals from any previous treatments, the actual process starts by inserting the implant post into the jaw to form a base for your new tooth. Made of titanium, the post is a biocompatible material that fuses naturally with your bone, becoming part of your jawbone.
Once your jaw has healed beautifully, we proceed with affixing the abutment to the implant post and make it ready to secure the artificial tooth or teeth.
This is the final step. Your dentist will create your natural-looking restoration and place it for you.
All-on-4® Dental Implant System
You can use dental implants to replace one, multiple, a full arch, or all of your teeth. The All-on-4 dental implant system is used to replace an entire arch. It saves you from needing an implant for every single missing tooth. Instead, it only requires four implants to replace an arch, whether it is the top or bottom arch of your smile. This system is very durable and makes the process much faster.
Pretreatments That Ensure Your Dental Implant Procedure is a Success
If both you and Dr. Miller agree that you need to replace your missing tooth with an implant, we start by checking your jawbone strength, gums, and overall oral health. If required, we will offer the necessary pretreatments to ensure you achieve the sustainable results you deserve.
Some of the services we offer include:
Periodontal Disease Treatment – Your gums are the foundation for your teeth. Without healthy gums, no treatment will be sustainable. At our practice, we do not proceed with any therapy or procedure until we treat your gums and ensure they are in good condition.
Gum or Gingival Grafting – If you suffer from receding gums, we may use gum grafting to treat this condition. Our periodontist will remove healthy tissue from the roof of the mouth and use it to build your gum line back up where it has receded.
Connective-Tissue Grafts – This is one of the procedures used to treat certain gum receding conditions or exposed tooth roots. Dr. Miller will need to remove tissue from the palate and attach it to surround the exposed root.
Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation – This is another method to treat gum recession. It is a non-invasive technique that is more comfortable than other techniques. During this treatment, a thin needle makes a small hole in the gum tissue to help loosen the gum tissue to cover the exposed root structure.
Bone Grafting – If your jaw is too soft or doesn’t have enough strength to support implants, we will need to perform a bone grafting procedure. This treatment involves adding new material to the jawbone to strengthen it. We either use your own transplanted bone or other materials designed specifically for grafting.
Socket Preservation – This is a specific type of bone grafting that we use right after tooth extraction. It protects the empty tooth socket from decay, forming a strong base for the dental implant placement.
Sinus lift – If you have been suffering from missing teeth in your upper jaw for an extended period, the natural bone below the sinuses might deteriorate. In this situation, we can perform a sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, during which we add bone below the sinuses to strengthen it. This procedure not only prepares you for an effective implant procedure but also gives you back your youthful appearance and restores your facial structure that was affected by bone deterioration.
